As one major healthcare provider moved from fragmented point solutions to an integrated data warehouse, they needed to also update their internal and external analytics reporting to match the speed and scale of their business. The client had been using excel spreadsheets for internal reports. Excel PowerPivot reports are versatile and easy to use for small scale operations but can be challenging for large enterprises. Development of Excel reports is time consuming. The auto data refresh is challenging to implement to a wide group of users in the organization. When the data grows too large from multiple data sources, auto data refresh often crashes. Microsoft Excel does offer some visualization features but does not offer a variety of visualization capabilities. It is also difficult to maintain reports between multiple users. It was clear that a change was necessary to keep up the speed and scale of the organization.
Pactera proposed converting the Excel Power Pivot reports to Power BI. The reports are hosted in a SSRS Power BI Site on SQL Server 2016. Doing so put business intelligence creation into the hands of analysts who can extract source data, create a dataset, transform or manipulate the data, visualize the data and publish the resulting reports and dashboards. For progressive or iterative analysis, analysts can now evolve the BI with new measures or dimensions without requiring IT involvement. The solution is secure and HIPPA approved so even the most sensitive patient data will not be lost or susceptible to attack.
